Kancho John Chang

Kancho John Chang has trained in Martial Arts most of his life and studied several styles such as Kung Fu, Judo, Tae Kwon Do, Wrestling, Wing Chun, and currently Karate.  He was born in Asia and came to Palo Alto at the age of 8.  He wrestled for over five years during both Junior High and High School.  Kancho Chang started practicing Shotokan Karate while studying International Business at Foothill College.  While attending studies, he was also the President of the Foothill College Karate Club from 1992 to 1999, allowing him to also present multiple demonstrations for both Foothill and De Anza College Karate Clubs.  He participated as Treasurer in the Chinese Club, Officer in the Vietnamese Club, President of the Filipino Club, and helped in multiple fundraisers for the Foothill/De Anza College Karate Clubs at the monthly De Anza College Flea Markets.  He graduated from Foothill College with a degree in International Business and then Career Dynamics International with a certification in networking.  Kancho Chang has actively practiced Karate for over twenty-five years, participating in many community events, demonstrations, and tournaments in multiple cities and states.  Thirteen years of competing in local, state, national, and international tournaments have earned him numerous 1st Place victories in Kata (forms) & Kumite (sparring).   In 2003, Kancho Chang decided to start his own school, and the style of Chang Tai Do was created.

Kancho Chang is the founder of Chang Tai Do Karate & Fitness, Inc.  He is currently a 4th Degree Black Belt in Shotokan Karate.  He teaches Karate, Kung Fu, Self-Defense, Wrestling, and weapons.  He occasionally gives seminars and demonstrations at hospitals and community center events to help promote safety, health, and keeping fit.  He believes teaching Martial Arts in the community will help build a safer, more aware, and ultimately better environment for our community.  He is currently teaching in the cities of Los Altos, Menlo Park (GAIS-School), Saratoga, and Sunnyvale (Ponderosa & Las Palmas Parks), where his students range from 4-year olds to adults since 2003.  Four of his students, who then became Instructors, have been with the programs for eleven years.   They have earned Second and Third Degree Black Belt with CTDKF, Inc. through the Sunnyvale Park And Recreation making them a Sensei (Instructor).  Sempai / Sensei Alex, Michael and Hironori are currently teaching at Sunnyvale programs with Kancho Chang.  The programs are successful.

Sunnyvale Recreation Center is one of the first four schools Kancho Chang established.  He has been teaching in Sunnyvale consistently since 2003, with several hundreds of students rotating through, many staying with Chang Tai Do until leaving the area to pursue college educations.  Current sessions of Chang Tai Do classes at Sunnyvale consist of 70-100 students.  Chang Tai Do, with the assistance of Sunnyvale Recreation Center, has also assisted couple tournaments with over two hundred participants competing in multiple levels of Kata, Kumite, and Weapons at both the individual and team levels.  Chang Tai Do has participated in Sunnyvale Recreation Center’s events, performed demonstrations to promote health, safety, respect and discipline.
